RE4 Remake: How to Get the Gas Mask (& What Does It Do?)
The Gas Mask in the Resident Evil 4 remake is obtained by beating a challenge; here's how it works.
Of all the five unique accessories in the Resident Evil 4 remake, the Gas Mask is the easiest to get. It only requires the player to beat the game on professional difficulty, asking for no specific prerequisite or rank. But as with every unlockable in the RE4 remake, acquiring the mask might still confuse some players because:

To get the Gas Mask, the player will need to beat the campaign on Professional difficulty with any rank. This completes the Peerless Agent challenge, which unlocks the mask in the Extra Content Shop. And the player can then purchase the Gas Mask in the shop for 2,000 Challenge Points.
Whether in a new playthrough or New Game Plus, beating the game in Professional mode rewards the player with the Gas Mask.
The Gas Mask is an accessory for Leon that unlocks aim-assist in all difficulties. Normally, the aim assist is only available in the Assisted Mode, and turning it on in other modes degrades the player's rank. But wearing the Gas Mask enables the option for Hardcore and Professional difficulties, too.
Like other accessories, the Gas Mask is accessible via the Extras menu. Players who want to wear it should go to the main or pause menu, select Extras, and put on the Gas Mask under the "Leon's Accessories" tab.
Note that wearing the Gas Mask won't necessarily enable the aim assist. After putting it on, the player should go to settings, open the Controls tab, and change "Aim Assist Type" to Snap or Snap and Follow.
There's no way to toggle the Gas Mask view off. Once it's removed, its perk will become inaccessible.
Functionality-wise, the Hunk-resembling Gas Mask is not an ideal accessory for Leon. Players are better off wearing the Chicken Hat or Cat Ears, which have practical perks. (The former increases Leon's health; the latter gives him infinite ammo.) But since the Gas Mask has no challenging prerequisites, most players will eventually unlock it. It's just that it won't be as effective as other apparel in the game.
The Resident Evil 4 remake is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
